Overview
Formula E is a pioneering motorsport championship that exclusively uses electric vehicles, combining cutting-edge technology with a mission to promote sustainability and clean energy. As the championship rapidly scaled its operations across the globe, it sought to modernise its IT systems to match its ambition. To achieve this, Formula E partnered with Cobry and Google Workspace to unify its digital environment, enabling greater collaboration, control and operational efficiency.
The Problem
With teams operating across different locations and systems, Formula E faced growing challenges around collaboration, cost and control. Its core services were fragmented across multiple platforms. Microsoft 365 was used for email, calendar and contacts, while file data was stored in both SharePoint and Egnyte.
This multi-system setup introduced inefficiencies, increased complexity for users and IT staff, and inflated costs through duplicate tooling. Formula E recognised that to remain agile and efficient, it needed to consolidate its services into a single platform that could support secure, modern and flexible ways of working.
The Solution
After reviewing its existing IT landscape, Formula E selected Google Workspace as its unified collaboration platform. Cobry was chosen by Google as the implementation partner to lead the migration and enablement.
Cobry’s team delivered a full suite of services including configuration of a new Google Workspace environment, secure migration of email, calendar, contact and file data from Microsoft 365, Egnyte and SharePoint, and the setup of shared drives with clear access structures.
To support user adoption, Cobry delivered change management services such as internal communications, user questionnaires, tailored training sessions and post-migration support. A dedicated project manager ensured the entire engagement remained on track and aligned with Formula E’s timeline and objectives.
Cobry collaborated closely with Formula E’s internal teams throughout, offering guidance, technical expertise and hands-on support to ensure long-term confidence in the new platform.
The Outcome
Formula E now benefits from a modern cloud-based workspace that brings communication, collaboration and data management together into a single platform.
Teams are able to work more effectively across regions with access to shared tools and information. The system is secure, easy to manage and accessible from any location. Consolidating platforms has also reduced licensing costs and simplified IT administration.
The success of the project was recognised by Google, who featured the collaboration in a detailed Google Cloud case study, highlighting how Cobry supported Formula E’s transition to Google Workspace.
Key Success Factors
Careful planning, clear communication and expert technical delivery were central to the success of this project. Cobry’s migration strategy minimised disruption, while the change management approach ensured that teams were engaged and ready. Training helped Formula E staff make the most of Google Workspace from day one.
What’s Next
With Google Workspace fully embedded, Formula E is well positioned to scale further and continue its mission to innovate and inspire through sustainable motorsport. The new platform provides a strong foundation for fast, flexible and secure operations that reflect the values of the championship.
